What are special cleaners for cars? Cleaners for a single, clearly named problem: tar, tree resin, glue residue, water spots or a greasy film before you seal. They work spot by spot on a small area and chemically dissolve what otherwise only comes off with pressure — and with risk to your clear coat.
Special cleaners for cars are problem-solvers for a single type of stain. Each one is tuned to one class of substance: bitumen and tar, resin and glue, limescale and water spots, silicone and wax residue. Because they only have this one job, they work faster and with less elbow grease than any all-purpose cleaner. The trade-off is that none of them does everything. You buy the right one for your problem, not the strongest.
Day-to-day from Detailing1: We get a lot of questions about stains that have already been worked three times with the wrong product. The pattern is nearly always the same: all-purpose cleaner first, then polish, then the fear that the paint is ruined. Only the order is off. Wash the car normally first and look at what's left once it's dry — that's the only point where you actually know which active you need. And test every special cleaner on a hidden spot, down on the sill say, before it touches a visible panel. Two minutes of testing saves you the polishing round afterwards.
A special cleaner doesn't replace a wash. It comes after, when something is still sitting on the paint once it's dry — something that doesn't belong there and that shampoo didn't shift.
It comes down to the type of dirt. Shampoo lifts loose grime that only sits on top: dust, road film, salt. Anything that has glued, resinified or chemically bonded stays put. This category picks up right at that line — it deals with the leftovers, not the whole surface.
The second difference is the mechanics. For dirt spread over a surface you can work with the wash mitt. On a stuck-on stain, rubbing is the worst idea going: you drag a hard particle across soft clear coat and pick up a scratch that's still there after the stain is gone. Chemistry dissolves without moving anything.
So the method is nearly always the same. Product onto a pad or straight onto the spot, let it dwell briefly, take it off with clean water or a clean cloth. Don't spray the whole car. What we see day-to-day: the most common mistake isn't too little product, it's too much area.
Dwell time is the lever almost everyone underrates. A solvent needs time to get into the stain and soften it from the inside. Wipe after five seconds and you're working against a stain that's still hard, so you end up leaning on it. Wait 45 seconds and you wipe off a soft one.
And the paint is bare afterwards. Every solvent, every degreaser, every acidic formula takes the wax or sealant with it at that spot. On a well-kept car you spot it straight away from the missing beading. A quick shot of spray sealant on the treated spot closes the gap in half a minute.
Tar spatter is the classic of this category. It sits low on the sills, behind the wheels and across the front end, and it builds up faster in summer than in winter because warm asphalt is softer.
Bitumen is a mix of long-chain hydrocarbons — chemically the same backbone as wax and oil. Water gets no grip on it, no matter how hot it is. Only an aliphatic solvent slides between the chains and softens the lump again. You can tell it's working: the black dot runs off downwards as a brown streak without you touching it.
The workhorse here is the Koch-Chemie Teerwäsche A „Tea" Bitumen- & Teerentferner. For us it's second only to the universal concentrate on sales in this category, and that's simply because tar hits anyone who doesn't drive exclusively on freshly resurfaced roads.
The routine is short. Wash the car, let the paint cool, lay the product onto the cold area, wait 30 to 60 seconds, rinse thoroughly. On warm metal the solvent flashes off before it works — then you're left with a dry ring on the paint and you start over.
Two limits come with it. Solvents attack fresh paintwork that's still curing, and they don't like long dwell times on rubber seals or trim. Spray, let it work, rinse — don't leave it sitting while you wander off on the phone.
Wrapped cars play by their own rule. Self-adhesive film is far more sensitive to solvents than clear coat, especially at the edges where the adhesive is exposed. Run your hand over both and they feel the same — a small hard bump. Chemically they have little in common, which is why they respond to different actives.
Tree resin is made of terpenes and resin acids. Fresh, it's tacky and soft; after a few days of sun it's hard and starts working its way into the clear coat — the resin shrinks as it cures and pulls at the paint surface. What comes off in two minutes at the weekend is a round imprint three weeks later that only polishing takes out.
You beat resin best with a related substance. The Koch-Chemie Orange Power „Op" Klebstoff-, Baumharz- und Gummientferner uses d-limonene from citrus peel — a natural terpene that re-dissolves hardened resin because it's chemically similar. In practice: after a short dwell the dot goes soft again and lifts off instead of needing to be scraped.
Glue residue from stickers, price tags and old service labels is a different material. Acrylic and rubber adhesives need a solvent that swells the glue film. The Koch-Chemie Eulex „Eu" Klebstoffentferner is the strong option for paint and glass, the Koch-Chemie Eulex M „Eum" Klebstoffentferner the milder one for sensitive interior plastics.
Inside, a third group joins in that plays no role outside. Ballpoint pen on light leather or a door card isn't a film of dirt, it's a dye that's soaked in. The Koch-Chemie Tinten- & Kuli-Ex „Tex" Tinten- und Kulientferner is tuned exactly for that and works with very little product on the cloth.
One note on old stickers, because it's the most common let-down. If a sticker has sat in the sun for years, the paint under it has aged differently to the paint next to it. The glue comes off, the difference in brightness stays — and that's a job for paint cleaning and polishing, not for a cleaner.
White rings after drying in the sun, or after the garden sprinkler catches the car, look like dirt and behave like stone. That's exactly why washing won't shift them.
Tap water carries calcium and magnesium ions, measured in degrees of water hardness. When the droplet evaporates, those minerals stay behind on the paint as carbonate and crystallise out — a wafer-thin layer of limescale in the exact shape of the droplet. Put plainly: you're trying to dissolve limescale with soap, and soap can't do it.
What dissolves carbonate is acid. That's why water-spot removers are set slightly acidic and turn the limescale into a water-soluble salt that simply rinses away. The INNOVACAR „100%" Scale Anti-Kalk & Wasserflecken-Entferner is the straight representative of this group in the range.
On ceramic-coated cars it's trickier. The coating itself is a silicon-oxygen structure, and an overly harsh acid attacks it instead of just dissolving the limescale on top. The hard limit of this group is the etched-in spot. When hard water has sat on the paint for a long time in blazing sun, the mineral layer has microscopically etched the clear coat at that point. The ring is no longer something on top, it's a dip. No cleaner on earth fills it back in — only removing material with the polisher does that.
We see this time factor underrated all the time. A water spot from last weekend comes off in three minutes. The same spot on the roof after a hot August costs you a polishing round. The urgency isn't in the spot, it's in the sun sitting on it.
The second big group in this category doesn't clean against visible dirt but against something you only notice once the sealant afterwards won't hold.
Coatings and sealants bond chemically to the paint surface. If there's still a film of polishing oils, silicones or old wax sitting there, nothing bonds — the layer sets on the film instead of the paint and comes away with it. Bottom line: the sealant wasn't bad, the surface underneath was contaminated.
The mild route goes through alcohol. The GYEON Q²M Prep Entfetter auf Alkoholbasis flashes off residue-free and takes polishing oils with it without stressing the paint. That's the standard panel wipe right before the coating, applied with two cloths: one damp to lay it on, one dry to take it straight back off.
Where silicone and old wax are sitting, alcohol isn't enough. The Koch-Chemie Silicon- & Wachsentferner „Sil" Entfettungsmittel is solvent-based and the pick when a car has been looked after with wax for years and is now being switched to ceramic.
For the whole surface there's a third route. The GYEON Q²M TotalRemover Wachs- und Coating-Entferner is alkaline and goes into the wash water or as a pre-wash to pull an old protective layer completely off the car in one pass. After that the paint is bare and needs working on promptly.
The order is the same for all three: wash, decontaminate, polish, degrease, seal. You degrease as the last step before coating, not before that. What we see day-to-day, this is where it goes wrong most often — run your hand over the bonnet once more after degreasing and you've put a film of grease back, and right there you get a high spot later.
Choosing in this category isn't about brand or price, it's about one single question: what exactly is stuck there?
Black dots low on the car that feel greasy are tar. Sticky or hard drops on horizontal panels under trees are resin. Rectangular edges with a grey glue haze are sticker residue. White rings with a sharp edge are limescale. A dull, soapy haze before coating is grease. For each of these five answers this category has its own product.
If you only want to buy one bottle, make it the one for tar. Two common problems explicitly don't belong here. Insect residue is protein and needs an alkaline formula that breaks the protein down — you'll find that under insect removers.
