  • Interior cleaners for the cockpit, seats and trim

What is an interior cleaner? A surfactant-based cleaner that lifts skin oils, dust, nicotine film and drink spills off the surfaces inside your car without attacking the grain of the plastic. It comes as a concentrate, ready-to-use in a spray bottle, and as a light detailer for a quick refresh between deep cleans. At Detailing1 there's a pick for every one of those forms.

Interior cleaners are water-based, mostly mildly alkaline cleaners with surfactants that lift the film of grime inside the car chemically instead of scrubbing it off. They work on the dashboard, centre console, door cards, steering wheel, seats and floor mats. Unlike a trim dressing they leave no protective layer — they take away, they lay nothing down. That's why the second step belongs right after the clean.

    • Surfactants instead of scrubbing. The actives grab the dirt with their oil-loving end and the rinse water with their water-loving end. The film lets go without you having to lean on it. What that means for you: the grain on the dashboard stays crisp instead of being buffed shiny.
    • Concentrates scale, spray bottles are ready to go. The Koch-Chemie Mehrzweckreiniger „Mzr" Universalreiniger is our best-selling item in this category and gets diluted anywhere from 1:10 to 1:50 — so a single litre makes up to 51 litres of cleaner.
    • A small group of its own tackles odour. This sub-group works differently from the surface cleaners: it binds odour molecules in the air or in the fabric. It won't get rid of the source of a smell, like damp insulation.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: What we see day-to-day is that the most common complaint about interior cleaners doesn't come from the product, it comes from the dosing. Mix a concentrate too strong, on the assumption that more active means more clean, and you get residue. The leftover surfactants sit on the surface, pull moisture out of the air and bind fresh dust with it — the console feels tacky after two days and gets dirty again faster than before. Stick to the weakest dilution that solves the problem, then wipe it down with a second cloth dampened with nothing but clean water. That's the step almost everyone skips.

Alkaline for grease, mild for the delicate stuff

Interior cleaners differ above all in one number that rarely makes it onto the label: the pH.

Mildly alkaline cleaners in the pH 9 to 11 range are the standard. Alkalis saponify fats, which is to say they make them water-soluble — exactly what you need against skin oils on the steering wheel, hand cream on the door card and the film of food grease on the console. You notice it in practice when a glossy steering wheel comes back grippy rather than soapy after one pass.

Neutral cleaners around pH 7 are weaker on grease and gentler for it. They're the right call for anything carrying a coating: displays, anti-glare surfaces, coated piano-black panels. The SONAX PROFILINE SensitiveSurface Detailer Innenraumreiniger is built for that zone.

Strongly alkaline cleaners beyond pH 11 belong in the footwell and on rubber mats, not on the dashboard. They can pull plasticisers out of the plastic, which turns the surface brittle over the years. There's no visible warning sign; the damage only shows up years later as a fine pattern of cracks.

Alongside pH, the solvent content matters. Pure water-based cleaners handle fresh dirt well and fall down on anything that's dried on — biro ink, adhesive residue from phone mounts, nicotine resin. Products with a solvent share bite there, but they call for restraint: what dissolves resin can also attack plasticisers and printed markings. Test cleaners like that on a hidden spot, say low down on the door card, before you take them to a printed control panel.

For everyday work that boils down to this: a mildly alkaline cleaner covers 90 percent of the surfaces, and for the rest you want a mild second product. Two bottles instead of one is the sensible investment here.

Concentrate, spray bottle or detailer for the quick refresh

The format you buy says less about the result than about your effort and your cost per use.

Concentrates are the pick for anyone looking after more than one car or working regularly. The upside isn't only the price per litre, it's the flexibility: the same bottle gives you a punchy cleaner for dried-on stains at 1:10 and a gentle one for the dust round at 1:50. What it asks of you is a spray bottle and the willingness to mix up a batch before each job.

Ready-to-use cleaners save you that step. The SONAX XTREME Auto-Innen-Reiniger Innenraumreiniger and the THE FINISHER „InsideUp" Innenraumreiniger are the typical examples. For one car and two to four goes a year that's the more pragmatic solution, because a 500 ml bottle covers several complete interiors and nothing dries out.

Interior detailers are the third group and often get misread. They carry little surfactant and a bit of a care component, and they're meant for the in-between round — lifting dust, wiping off fingerprints, freshening up the touch points. The Meguiars Ultimate Interior Detailer Innenraumreiniger lives here. They don't replace a deep clean; they haven't got the cleaning power for it.

The TUGA Chemie Kunststoff-Teufel® Innenraumreiniger sits between the two worlds and is our second-biggest seller in this category — strong enough for the deep clean and mild enough for regular use.

Seat fabric, steering wheel and display each want something different

Inside the car an interior cleaner meets at least five materials, and three of them come with special rules.

Hard plastic is the simplest case. Spray onto the cloth, wipe, dry off. Just about any product in the category works here. There's one caveat: grained surfaces hold the dirt down in their dips, and a flat cloth just skates over the top. If a grey haze stays after wiping, it's not the cleaner, it's the missing mechanical action — a soft brush works the foam into the grain, then you lift it back out with the cloth.

Rubber and soft plastic on seals, trays and mats take more than the dashboard does and often need it too, because road grime works its way in there. What they don't take is frequent degreasing with no care afterwards: every cleaning pass pulls plasticiser, and with nothing put back the door seal goes hard and leaky over the years.

Fabric upholstery calls for a light hand with moisture. The cleaner lifts the dirt at the surface, and whatever you don't take back up travels downward as it dries and comes back as a ring. So go on sparingly and press in firmly with a dry terry cloth. For heavily soiled seats the products in Textile & Upholstery are the better bet, because they work with foam rather than liquid.

Displays are the one area where the wrong product does lasting damage. The anti-glare layer is a few micrometres thick and reacts to alcohol and strong alkalis. The THE FINISHER „DisplayExpert" Displayreiniger is built for the job.

Leather stays out of this category. Automotive leather carries a pigmented top coat that surfactant-heavy cleaners start to lift — you can tell because the cloth picks up colour. For that there's Leather with its own pH-tuned products.

Top to bottom, and always with two cloths

The routine for a full interior takes around 20 minutes once you've got the hang of it. The first time it's more like 35, and that's normal.

Before the cleaner comes the vacuum. Loose dust that gets damp can't be vacuumed any more — it turns to sludge in the seat seams and the vent slots. A soft brush drives the dust out of the vanes to where the vacuum can reach it.

Then you spray, and onto the cloth. Otherwise the mist drifts onto the display, the vents and into the gaps between the panels, dries there and leaves a pale ring. Work top to bottom so loosened dirt doesn't run onto surfaces you've already cleaned.

The second cloth takes up the loosened liquor. This step is the one that decides the result: whatever you don't take off dries as residue and binds fresh dust within a few days. Two cloths are the minimum, four are better — one for cleaner, one for drying, one for the care step after, and one just for glass.

Two spots get forgotten almost every time, and both are touch points. The inside of the door-handle recess collects skin oils and hand cream in an amount hardly anyone suspects, because you never look in there. And the seat belt itself: it runs through your hand on every drive, then disappears into the guide loop and drags the dirt in with it. Pull the belt all the way out, lay it over a damp cloth and draw it through slowly. Then let it dry pulled out — rolled up wet, it turns musty.

With a heavy nicotine film one pass isn't enough. The film sits in the grain of the plastic and in the headliner too, and moisture is tricky up there, because too much wet lets the headliner fabric come away from its backing. Two mild passes beat one aggressive one.

The range has its own group against odour

Our range in this category runs wide, and the way it's weighted says something about the market. SONAX makes up the biggest group, followed by Meguiar's. Koch-Chemie, GYEON, CarPro and D-CON split the rest.

The revenue leader is a Koch-Chemie product all the same. The Mehrzweckreiniger „Mzr" isn't a pure interior cleaner but a universal concentrate that works outside and in the wash as well. That double duty is exactly what explains its position: buy it for the interior and you end up using it on the floor mats, the wheel arches and the door sills.

If you'd rather have a specialised product than a universal concentrate, the GYEON Q²M InteriorDetailer „Purify Line" Innenraumreiniger gives you an agent cut for the interior that dries down without residue. The SONAX CleanStar „Ecocert" Innenraumreiniger is the pick for anyone who cares about Ecocert certification of the ingredients.

The odour group runs to seven items and works differently from the rest. Air fresheners like Meguiar's Air-Re-Fresher range work through the ventilation and spread scent across the whole cabin. Odour removers, by contrast, bind molecules chemically instead of masking them. Honestly, both are treating the symptom: if the smell is coming from damp insulation under the carpet, a fouled A/C evaporator or the headliner, nothing in this group holds longer than a few days. Chasing the cause takes more time and is the only lasting fix.

What the range deliberately doesn't cover are special cases like Alcantara and leather. Both react to surfactant-heavy cleaners, and both have their own categories with their own chemistry for that reason.

One car or several decides the choice

Which product suits you comes down to the number of cars and how often you clean.

For one car with two to four cleans a year a ready-to-use spray bottle is plenty. The price advantage of a concentrate never pays off at that volume, and the mixed-up leftovers just sit around unused.

For several cars in the household or monthly upkeep the concentrate is the right answer. At a middling dilution one litre makes enough cleaner for around 40 complete interiors, and you dial the strength to suit.

A used-car purchase runs on its own maths. There's a one-off deep clean to do that burns through far more product than any follow-up upkeep — on a smoker's car reckon on three to four times the usual amount and several passes. After that, consumption drops to normal levels. A concentrate is worth it here even for a single car, simply because the deep clean eats the volume.

For detailers and anyone working daily, a mild second product for delicate surfaces joins the concentrate. That combination covers every car that passes through your hands without you having to guess at a coated display.

And if you're already thinking one step ahead: after the clean comes the protection step. You'll find the right products under Trim care, both steps together under Interior care. For the overview of the whole interior including fabric and leather, there's Interior.
