The order decides it, not the tyre cleaner
Cleaning tyres sounds like the simplest job in the whole detail, which is exactly why it so often happens in the wrong order. One of the most common questions that reaches us through the shop is just as unassuming: should I clean the tyres before I put dressing on them? The short answer is yes. The long answer explains why your last dressing ended up as black specks on the wheel arch after two days, and why that was almost never the product's fault but down to the order and the timing before it.
Tyre dressing only bonds to bare rubber. If you want to clean tyres and then dress them, the minutes before you apply anything decide it: which wheel goes when, how stiff the brush is and how dry the sidewall has to be.
Your dressing slings off because the sidewall was not clean
Dressing that sits on the wheel arch and doors as sticky black specks after the first drive is rarely a bad product. It went on top of a release layer.
The brownish haze on a neglected sidewall is not road grime. The tyre sweats antiozonants and waxes out to the surface as its own UV protection, where they oxidise into an oil-loving, water-repelling film. For the tyre that is protection doing its job. For any dressing it is a barrier: the emulsion never bonds with the rubber, it floats on the wax. Why that film forms and how to read it is covered in our piece on why tyres turn brown.
The fallout comes in two parts. Visually the finish goes patchy, because the oxidised layer soaks up differently from spot to spot. Mechanically it is worse: under rotation the unbonded dressing gets thrown off along with the top of the bloom. Detailers call that sling, and in the forums it is the single most discussed annoyance in tyre care. The cause is nearly always the prep, not the bottle.
Where the question gets asked is telling. It almost never reaches us on a cleaner page, but on the pages for applicators and dressings. So the cleaner is already on the shelf, the dressing is in the basket, and the real uncertainty is the order in between. Swapping brands instead just trades one working product for the next one that lands on the same layer of wax.
That is why the cleaning step is not an optional warm-up. It decides whether your dressing lasts three weeks or three days. The tyre comes before the wheel, not after it
Clean the wheel first and you then rinse wheel cleaner down over the sidewall, cancelling out part of the alkaline action that gets the tyre clean in the first place.
The chemistry behind it is simple. Acidic cleaners in the pH 0 to 5 range dissolve inorganic deposits: iron fallout, limescale, baked-on brake dust. Against organic waxes, silicone oils and rubber bloom they do very little. Alkaline cleaners in the pH 9 to 14 range work the other way round. They start saponification, split fats and oils, and turn the water-insoluble residue temporarily water-soluble. A pH-neutral shampoo simply has no chemical muscle for this job.

So the order at the car runs: pre-clean the tyre, then the wheel, then rinse everything together, dry, and only then dress. Use an APC instead and you dilute it somewhere between 1:4 and 1:10 depending on how bad it is, and you plan for a good few more passes than with a ready-to-use tyre cleaner. On bottle size it pays to do the sums before you reach for the biggest one. A ready-to-use tyre cleaner uses roughly 20 millilitres per tyre. A 500 ml bottle therefore covers about 25 tyres, a good six full sets. For a private driveway with two or three deep cleans a year that lasts several seasons. Only once you are regularly turning round other people's cars does the litre or the jerry can start to add up.
One wheel at a time, or the alkali etches the clear coat
An alkaline tyre cleaner that dries on the clear coat of the rim flange leaves dull, whitish patches that only a machine polish will take back out.
The mechanism is unspectacular and that is exactly why it is so common. Cleaner inevitably runs off the sidewall onto the rim flange. Once the water base evaporates there, the alkali is left behind at full strength and attacks the lacquer. Two things speed it up, and they like to turn up together at weekends: warm metal and direct sun. So you never work hot wheels and never work in full sun, but in the shade and on a wheel you have let cool down first.
In practice that means one wheel at a time: take it all the way through, rinse, then move to the next. Spraying all four at once looks like a time-saver and is the surest route to dried-on edges. Pre-wet the tyre with a soft jet of water first. That drops the surface temperature, rinses off loose grit that would otherwise act like sandpaper under the brush, and stops the cleaner flashing straight into the pores.
Then spray generously onto the wet sidewall until it is visibly wetted and the product foams up a little. Consumption on a ready-to-use cleaner runs at around 20 millilitres per tyre. Dwell time is one to three minutes, five at most when it is cold. Longer buys you nothing: after three minutes the reaction is done and the product only dries on from there. A second short pass beats one long first pass every time.
A soft brush smears what a stiff one lifts out
Soft fibres glide over the sticky oxide layer, clog up with old silicone dressing as they go, and spread the loosened film around instead of lifting it out of the pores.
This is the mistake beginners make most often, and it comes from an understandable worry: nobody wants to scratch their rubber. The tyre is the toughest part on the whole wheel. What actually troubles it is not the bristle, it is the chemistry. Spraying and rinsing with no mechanical work fails against sticky bloom on pure physics, however good the cleaner is.
The right tool is a stiff, short-bristled tyre brush in durable nylon or polypropylene. Short firm bristles deliver the shear force needed to get into micro-pores, grooves and the raised lettering. Work in circles and straight strokes across the whole sidewall, and deliberately into the narrow zone between tyre and rim flange. That is where the most stubborn baked-on grime sits, and hardly anyone looks there. The foam under the brush is your gauge: while it keeps turning brown or muddy, you are still pulling bloom out. Once it stays white, only the surfactants are foaming and the sidewall is clear.
The raised lettering is where beginners and old hands part company. Tyre size, maker's name and the small symbols sit in recesses a few millimetres deep, and that is exactly where the old dressing film stays put as a pale rim when the brush only runs over the smooth face. For those spots a second detailing brush with firm bristles earns its keep, working the lettering separately while the cleaner is dwelling anyway. It is maybe twenty seconds a wheel, and it decides whether the sidewall later reads evenly dark or speckled.
Two to three minutes sit between rinsing and dressing
Only once the sidewall looks matte dark grey rather than glossy wet is it ready to take dressing. Glossy wet means standing water in the pores.
This step costs nothing but patience and still gets skipped more than any other. A tyre has microscopic pores and deep grooves that hold water. Put a water-based gel on a sidewall that is still damp and the capillary water thins the formula, the emulsion breaks, and the finish goes patchy instead of even. Two to three minutes of draining usually does it. If you want to be precise, keep a separate microfibre for the sidewall or blow it dry with compressed air.
What the result should look like afterwards is a deliberate choice, not a product question. That is exactly how it is meant. And whatever ends up on the sidewall, none of it belongs on the tread. The tread compound is built for grip, a dressing film drops the friction coefficient and lengthens your braking distance.
The season plays into this. September daytime temperatures here sit around 21 degrees, humidity stays high and the sun is lower than at midsummer. That is ideal for the cleaning step, because nothing flashes off early. For the dressing afterwards it flips: damp air and cool rubber noticeably extend the flash-off time. After applying, give the car half an hour standing still before the first drive. At twelve degrees in October that quickly becomes an hour.
Three times a year is plenty, more costs tyre life
The deep clean down to white foam belongs at the wheel-swap dates, not in the weekly wash.
The reason is the same one that creates blooming in the first place. The waxes and antiozonants you strip out when degreasing are the tyre's protective reserve against UV and ozone. The rubber rebuilds them over months. Leach that out weekly with high-alkaline cleaners over several passes and the reserve empties faster than it refills, and the rubber ages early. Twice a year at the wheel swap plus once in between hits the balance well.
How much work one pass is depends on the history. A tyre that has had solvent-based dressing layered onto it for years realistically needs three to five passes before the foam stays white. A tyre in regular care that has only seen water-based dressings is done in one to two. So budget noticeably more time for the first round than for the fifth.
Two limits remain that even a good tyre cleaner will not shift. Baked-on tar and bitumen spatter do not react to alkali, for those you need a solvent-based tar remover applied spot by spot rather than across the whole tyre. And whitewall tyres stay off the list, because the white compound yellows in response to alkaline cleaners.
From that you can build a realistic plan for Sunday. On a first deep clean allow around fifteen minutes per wheel, so a good hour for the set, plus draining time and the dressing itself. On a car in regular care it is closer to five minutes a wheel. If you plan to clean tyres on Sunday and lay out cleaner, stiff brush, detailing brush and a separate drying towel today, you lose no time hunting for them. Then find the shade, start with the wheel that stood in the sun longest, and work clockwise round the car from there.
Detailing1's tip from the shop: Split the tyre into four quarters in your head and work them one after another instead of going round in one lap. On an 18-inch wheel you are otherwise back at the start halfway round, and by then the cleaner has been sitting there for two and a half minutes. That is exactly the zone where the dull edges at the rim flange come from, the ones we see most often on customer cars. We keep a second bucket of clean water next to the wheel for it and rinse each finished quarter straight away before the next one gets sprayed. It costs two minutes a car and saves a polish at the rim flange.
