Clean paint isn't the same as smooth paint
You wash the car properly, dry it off, and the bonnet still feels rough as fine sandpaper the first time you run your hand over the paint. That's not water spots and it's not leftover dirt. Those are tiny foreign particles wedged so tightly into the clear coat that no shampoo on earth will lift them. This is exactly where clay bar starts to do its job.
Clay pulls out mechanically what the wash leaves behind, shearing embedded particles out of the clear coat. It comes in two grades plus the pad version, and by far the most important call isn't the grade, it's the lubricant. This guide shows you which clay belongs on which paint.
What clay bar is, and why washing isn't enough
A clay bar is an elastic polymer mass that mechanically pulls firmly-lodged contaminants out of the clear coat that a normal wash won't touch. The surfactants in shampoo only grab loose dirt. Anything baked or embedded into the top layer of paint just stays put.
The contamination we're dealing with splits into two worlds. On the inorganic side you've got iron fallout, brake dust and industrial fallout, the finest iron particles that fly off glowing hot during braking and fuse into the soft clear coat. On the organic side there's tar, bitumen, tree sap and bug remains. Both sit microscopically proud of the paint surface, and both sail straight through your wash mitt.
Whether your paint is affected is something the baggie test tells you. You slip a thin freezer bag over your hand and glide gently across the freshly washed, still-damp paint. The thin film cancels out the cushioning of your skin and passes even the smallest bumps straight to your fingertips. If it feels rough and gritty, decontamination is due. If it feels smooth as glass, you can skip the step.
Why bother. Polish a paint that's this contaminated and you drag the hard iron particles across the surface under the pad and grind in deep micro-scratches, known in the trade as pigtails and swirls. And a ceramic coating won't bond properly on dirty paint, because the reactive silanes need a clean clear-coat structure to cross-link to. Claying isn't a cosmetic step, then, it's the entry ticket for any polish and any protection.
One thing to get straight, claying isn't polishing. The clay is a tough, elastic polymer mass, classically polybutene-based, shot through with the finest abrasive grains of ground calcium carbonate. It works purely above the paint surface and lifts out whatever is sitting on top. A polish, by contrast, shaves off a wafer-thin layer of clear coat to level scratches in the surface. In short, clay removes foreign particles, polish removes defects. The two go together, in exactly that order, otherwise the polish works the dirt deeper into the paint.
Mild, abrasive or pad for three paint conditions
Clay bar comes in two grades, plus the modern pad version, and each step is built for a different paint condition. The grade controls how much the clay takes off and how high the risk of leaving fine marks behind.

What actually matters when you choose
The most important decision when claying isn't the grade, it's the lubricant. Without an unbroken lubricating film between clay and paint, even the mildest clay does damage.
The principle behind it is pure friction physics. A clay lubricant like the GYEON Q²M ClayLube lays a hydrodynamic film over the paint. Translated, the film protects the good and only frees the bad to be sheared off. Let that film break and you get dry sliding friction on the spot, the clay stutters, digs into the clear coat and drags dull, chalky rub marks, the dreaded marring.
The most expensive mistake here costs nothing extra, it happens out of laziness. Plain tap water from the hose as a lubricant is the number one killer of paint in every forum. Water has too high a surface tension and no lubricity worth mentioning, the film breaks after seconds. The second choosing factor is the paint condition itself, read off the baggie test. Smooth paint with just the odd spot needs the mild clay, a rough, neglected paint the abrasive one plus the polish afterwards. When in doubt the pros go by a simple rule, better to start with the milder clay and go over twice than take off one pass too much with the aggressive one.
Chemistry first, then the clay
Clay bar is the last decontamination step, not the first. The trade rule for the European market is simply, chemistry first, mechanics after. The more thoroughly the chemistry works ahead, the less dangerous shearing the clay has to do.
The clean sequence looks like this. First a touchless pre-wash with a cleaning foam like the Koch-Chemie Gentle Snow Foam Gsf, which encapsulates loose road grime, followed by a gentle two-bucket wash. Then the chemical iron removal with an iron remover, after that the tar remover, and dead last the clay. This way the chemistry lifts up to ninety percent of the coarse contamination without any contact, so the clay only has to pick up the microscopic remnants.
That iron comes before tar has a solid reason. Claying itself calls for light pressure and a straight pattern. You lay the clay flat, pull it in overlapping passes across the wet surface and let the lubricant do the work. Working temperatures sit best between twelve and eighteen degrees, because the chemistry before it then reacts cleanly and nothing dries on too early. A full decontamination is due once or twice a year, and in spring after the salt and grit season it matters most.
What plenty of people forget, after claying the paint is bare. The mechanical decontamination takes the last remnants of old wax or sealant layers off along with the foreign particles, and the clear coat is left with no protection. That's exactly why claying is the step right before protection and never the end of the job. Bank on a sealant, a wax or at least a quick detailer following straight after. Leave the freshly clayed, glass-smooth paint standing unprotected and you lose the very window that made all the work worthwhile.

The answer is almost always too little lubricant. We'd rather spray once too often than once too little, and the moment the clay grabs slightly on the pull or gets audible, the film is gone. Which clay for which paint
In the end the choice comes down to a simple match, read off the state of your paint and your care routine. Three cases cover just about everything.
If your paint gets looked after regularly and only feels slightly rough on the baggie test, then take the mild blue clay with plenty of lubricant, once or twice a year, no mandatory polish afterwards. If the paint has been neglected for a long time and feels distinctly gritty, then reach for the abrasive red clay and plan the polish firmly in, because the fine holograms come with the territory. And if you regularly clay big vehicles or whole panels, then the clay pad on the machine saves you noticeable time.
Whatever the tool, two things stay the same. Chemistry first, then the mechanics, and always with an unbroken glide film. Stick to those two rules and you get glass-smooth paint as the perfect base for polish and sealant, instead of picking up fresh swirls.
