What makes the Meguiar's Convertible Top Cleaner stand out? It pulls acid rain, bird droppings, oil and general grime off canvas, mohair, cloth and vinyl convertible tops — biodegradable, rinses off residue-free and gentle on the material. 16 oz (473 ml).
A convertible top is one of the most care-intensive parts of any car. As the highest and most exposed panel, it takes constant hits from UV, fine dust, pollen, bird droppings and acidic rain when it's down — and when it's up, it's your main barrier against damp and cold. Skip the regular upkeep and the top slowly loses its proofing, gets more prone to mould and moss, and starts looking tired. The first and most important step in any top care is a proper clean — and that's exactly what the Meguiar's Convertible Top Cleaner was built for. The specially formulated cleaning solution cleans every common top material deep and safe, without attacking the delicate fibres or leaving residue behind.
Day-to-day from Detailing1: Dampen the top with clean water before you clean — it loosens loose dirt and helps the cleaner do its job. Spray the cleaner evenly onto the damp top and work it in lengthwise with a soft top brush (nothing too stiff!). Never brush against the grain of the fibres. Rinse the top thoroughly with clean water — no cleaner can be left in the material. Let it dry fully. Only once it's completely dry do you apply a proofing — a clean, dry top is the only one that takes the proofer properly.
Plenty of convertible owners hit their top with a proofer — but skip the step that actually matters: a proper clean. A proofer laid down on a dirty or aged top never soaks fully into the fibres. The dirt particles and old wax residue on the top form a barrier that stops the proofer bonding evenly. What you get is patchy protection with weak spots where moisture can creep in.
The cleaner spray solves that as step 1 in the care cycle: clean, dry, proof. Only when the top is genuinely clean and free of old residue can the proofer that follows build its full protection. The deep-acting formula pulls out not just surface grime but the deposits that have worked their way into the top fibres over months or years.
How often you clean depends on how hard you use the car and the conditions it lives in. Rule of thumb: if you run your convertible year-round and park under trees a lot, clean the top at least four times a year. In towns with more dust and heavy bird traffic, more often. Sounds like a lot, but day-to-day it's a 20–30 minute job — and it pays off in a top that lasts noticeably longer.
Another big one is keeping mould and moss at bay. Organic stuff — pollen, tree sap, leaf residue — is exactly what moss and mould feed on when a top is left unkempt. Regular cleaning with the Convertible Top Cleaner stops that build-up and keeps the top free of organic growth. Mould on a convertible top is a pain to get rid of and can wreck the material for good — prevention through regular cleaning is a lot easier than fixing it after the fact.
Not all convertible tops are built the same, and that changes how you clean them. The three most common top materials differ in their structure and in what they ask of a cleaner.
Canvas and cloth tops: The most common material on modern convertibles is a woven canvas top made from synthetic or natural fibres. Cloth tops breathe well but are prone to water soak-through and mould once the proofing fades. The open fibre structure also makes them more likely to trap dirt particles. The Convertible Top Cleaner works into these fibres and lifts the trapped particles without harming the weave.
Mohair tops: Mohair is a premium material made from natural goat fibres, mostly fitted to classic sports cars and vintage models. It's especially delicate and needs a gentle clean. The Convertible Top Cleaner is tested for mohair and cleans it without changing its signature texture. With mohair, always work with a really soft brush and light pressure.
Vinyl tops: Vinyl tops shrug off water and mould better than cloth tops, but they don't like solvent-based cleaners or overly alkaline products that turn the material brittle. The Convertible Top Cleaner is formulated to be vinyl-friendly and keeps the material supple and colour-fast.
Cleaning a convertible top calls for a different technique than the bodywork. The material is more delicate, the surfaces less even, and the risk of causing damage with the wrong technique is higher. Getting the approach right makes all the difference.
Prep: Move the car into the shade or clean on an overcast day. Direct sun dries the cleaner too fast, before it can do its work. Pre-rinse the top with a gentle stream of water — no pressure washer, which could damage the seams. A soft, low-pressure hose is plenty to clear loose dirt and dampen the material.
Applying the cleaner: Spray the cleaner evenly onto the damp top. A standard top takes about 15–20 ml. The bottle throws an even mist that spreads without streaks. Don't miss any spots — cover the whole top, especially the edges and seams.
Working it in: Work it in along the grain with a soft, medium-firm top brush (not too stiff, or you'll tear at the fibres). Skip circular motions — they knot the fibres up. On stubborn stains, lay a little more cleaner on locally and give it 1–2 minutes extra dwell time. The cleaner foams up a little as you work it — that's a sign the active ingredients are doing their thing.
Rinsing: Rinse the top thoroughly with clean, running water. No cleaner can stay in the material — leftovers would spoil the proofing that follows. Rinse top to bottom, so the water carries the loosened grime downward instead of running back into areas you've already cleaned.
Drying: Let the top air-dry fully — don't rush it with a hairdryer or hot air, since heat can damage the material. Depending on temperature and humidity, full drying takes 2–4 hours. Only then do you apply a proofing.
A handy tip for drying: park the convertible in the sun, but not in extreme heat. Moderate warmth from the sun speeds up drying without stressing the material. Once it's fully dry the top feels a touch rougher than when damp — that's normal, and a sign of the open, clean fibre structure that takes the follow-up proofing best.
Convertible owners know a handful of typical top problems, and the Convertible Top Cleaner is the first move for each of them:
Lime spots and water marks: Hard water leaves white lime residue on the top once it dries — most visible on vinyl, but a nuisance on dark cloth tops too. The Convertible Top Cleaner dissolves these mineral deposits and brings back the even look. With really heavy lime spotting, a second pass may be needed.
Bird droppings and tree sap: These organic messes are among the most common and most damaging things that land on a convertible top. Bird droppings carry uric acid that etches the material if it's not cleared quickly. Reach for the Convertible Top Cleaner on these as soon as you can — the longer they sit, the deeper they go.
Green film and algae: In damp regions, or on cars that sit outside for long stretches, a green film of algae or moss often forms on the top. The Convertible Top Cleaner clears this organic growth effectively, as long as you give it enough dwell time — on heavy growth, let it work 3–5 minutes before you brush.
Oily deposits from the road: Cars that rack up motorway miles pick up oily deposits on the top from the tyre spray of the cars around them. Water alone won't shift these oil-based marks — the surfactants in the Convertible Top Cleaner grab them and let you rinse them off completely. On light-coloured tops especially, these deposits stand out and are worth clearing regularly.
Dried-on old dirt: A top that stood through winter without a clean often shows stubborn deposits in spring from rain, frost and organic matter. A thorough spring clean with the Convertible Top Cleaner is the recommended way to open the convertible season, before you re-proof the top for the months ahead.
The market for top cleaners holds various products that differ in make-up, material compatibility and where they fit. A straight overview helps you decide.
Convertible Top Cleaner vs car shampoo: A normal car shampoo is formulated for painted bodywork, not for textile top materials. Car shampoos often leave surfactant residue in the top fibres and hurt the water repellency. For regular top cleaning, a dedicated top cleaner like the Convertible Top Cleaner is the better call.
Convertible Top Cleaner vs all-purpose cleaner: APCs and household cleaners often run too high or too low on pH for delicate top materials. Vinyl tops in particular react badly to the wrong pH — fading and brittleness can follow. The dedicated Convertible Top Cleaner is tested across the whole pH-sensitive range of convertible top materials.
Convertible Top Cleaner as part of a care system: It works best as step 1 in a two-stage care system: clean first, then proof. As a companion product, Meguiar's offers the Convertible Top Protector, which builds the protective layer after cleaning. Running both together gives noticeably better long-term results than proofing alone with no clean first.
Clean only now and then without proofing separately, and the top loses its protection faster — the fibres get more porous over time and take on moisture, which invites mould. A consistent clean-and-proof every 6–12 months measurably extends the life of a cloth top and saves a lot more in the long run than a replacement top would cost.
The Meguiar's convertible top cleaner spray is the right pick for any convertible owner who wants to keep their top in good shape for the long haul. The 16 oz (473 ml) bottle at 20.90 EUR is good for plenty of full cleaning cycles, so it works out well on cost.
It's an especially good shout for the spring clean after winter, before every re-proof, and after heavy use in wet spells or after parking under trees. If you use your convertible regularly, treat the top with the Convertible Top Cleaner at least twice a year — in spring, and in autumn before winter.
If you're deep-cleaning a top for the first time — say after buying the car, or after a few years of neglect — plan a bit more time for that first go. A heavily soiled or moss-grown top may need two passes to come fully clean. After that, the regular maintenance clean is much quicker and easier. It's worth putting the work into that first recovery, because a top that's been thoroughly cleaned once and then proofed is far easier to keep in good shape.
For a full convertible care routine we recommend the following system: clean with the Convertible Top Cleaner, let it dry fully, then proof with a Convertible Top Protector. Run this care cycle twice a year and the top stays water-repellent, mould-resistant and good-looking — far longer than it would without regular care. Detailing1 carries the whole Meguiar's range for convertible care, plus more interior cleaners and odour fresheners for the complete, well-kept package.
Not sure about Meguiars Convertible Top Cleaner soft top cleaner? Get it explained:
The convertible top cleaner is suitable for all common convertible top materials: canvas, mohair, fabric, and vinyl. The formula is tailored to the different requirements of these materials and cleans effectively without causing damage.
No — the Convertible Top Cleaner is exclusively a cleaner. For waterproofing, you need a separate waterproofing agent. However, cleaning with the Convertible Top Cleaner is the best preparation for subsequent waterproofing, as only a clean convertible top optimally absorbs the waterproofing agent.
That depends on usage and environmental conditions. As a general rule: every 2–3 months during active driving. In case of heavy soiling from bird droppings, tree sap, or Saharan dust, treat immediately, as these contaminants can quickly penetrate and become harder to remove.
Not necessarily after every cleaning — but we recommend it regularly every 2–3 cleanings. A freshly cleaned convertible top absorbs waterproofing agents particularly well, thereby restoring its weather protection.
