What is the A1 "HIGH END" Spray Wax? A spray wax from Dr. Wack that you mist onto clean paint — damp paint is fine — spread with a microfibre towel and take straight back off. Not approved for matt paint, matt wrap or the glass in your line of sight.

A1 "HIGH END" Spray Wax is a water-based spray wax from Dr. Wack. The safety data sheet puts the density at 1.01 grams per cubic centimetre and calls the emulsion partly water-soluble. That is exactly why it still works on paint that is damp after the final rinse: the water left on the panel does not get in the way, it helps carry the product across.

It is a thick emulsion all the same. At 730 millipascal-seconds at 20 degrees it is around 700 times thicker than water, so it stays where the mist lands instead of running down the door. Day-to-day that means two things: you need very little per section, and every extra pull of the trigger leaves a film on the paint that the towel then has to lift off again.

• The test win is measured, not claimed. auto motor und sport ran ten spray waxes against each other and put the HIGH END first in June 2022 with 92 out of 100 points, full marks for water repellency. AUTO STRASSENVERKEHR landed on the same overall score two months later and gave 35 out of 35 points for hydrophobicity and long-term protection in the detailed scoring. Both tests ran on the reformulated mix that has been on the shelf since 1 March 2022.
• pH 7.1 means nothing here attacks anything. The data sheet measures 7.1 at 20 degrees, so effectively neutral. The spray wax has neither the acid of a wheel cleaner nor the alkali of a pre-cleaner, so there is nothing to bite into whatever is already sitting on the paint. You notice it because rubber seals, trim strips and gloss wrap come out of the session without white edges.
• Two bottle sizes with a clear split. The 500 ml bottle comes with a trigger gun and is built for the whole car. The 100 ml bottle is a pump spray for the door pocket and is plenty when you only touch up one panel. Per litre, the big bottle works out a good 40 per cent cheaper than the small one.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: What we see a lot on dark paint: people spray straight onto the panel and then find streaks standing in the backlight. The product is rarely the problem, the amount is. At 730 millipascal-seconds, one pull too many already lays down a layer a single towel cannot fully pick up. On black, dark blue and gloss wrap you put two pulls into the towel instead of onto the paint. Streaks that still show are not damage: spray again, spread, take it off with the dry side.

Too much spray wax makes the streaks, not too little

Dr. Wack calls for a thin coat on one connected section at a time, which you spread with the microfibre towel and take off straight away with the unused side of the towel, no waiting.

The sequence is spelled out word for word in the product information sheet: shake the bottle well, turn the nozzle to spray, mist on thinly, spread, wipe off, nozzle back to stop. Stop is the anti-leak setting. A section is roughly one panel: a door, a wing, half the bonnet. Spray a whole side of the car in one go and you end up fighting product that has already started to grab by the time you reach the back.

Two of the notes are conditions, not suggestions: never in direct sun and never on hot paint, and never let the product dry on. On a bonnet that has stood an hour in August sun, the water flashes off faster than you can move the towel. At that point you are not spreading a film any more, you are rubbing residue around.

On damp paint the spray wax is approved as a drying aid. You pull the drying towel over the panel, mist onto paint that is still slightly damp, spread and wipe off. Dr. Wack then wants the paint kept away from water for at least an hour so the long-term effect can set. Drive straight out into a downpour and you get the beading, but you have given away the rest.

The order around the car is yours to pick, the direction is not. Work top down, so roof, bonnet and boot lid first, then the flanks. The horizontal panels catch the most rain and the most bird mess, and they should not be waiting while your towel is already dragging product over from the doors. The two bottles also spray differently: the 500 ml has a trigger gun, the 100 ml a plain pump spray that needs more pulls for the same area.

Two towels is not being precious with this one. Dr. Wack recommends two of its own premium microfibre towel, one for spreading and one for the wipe-off, because the thick emulsion saturates the first towel fast. Both verified Trusted Shops reviews so far pick out exactly that point: laying it down and taking it off is straightforward as soon as the towel is dry and clean.

Dr. Wack does not put a number of months on it

The manufacturer writes months of lasting paint protection and puts the limit in the same line: depending on external factors. There is no hard figure anywhere, not even in the data sheet.

What was measured is the hydrophobicity. The word literally means water-shy and describes how hard a surface pushes water away. You see it as beading, droplets standing up proud, and as sheeting, when the water runs off in one closed curtain. In plain terms: the less water stays on the paint, the fewer limescale rings dry in after the rain. That one discipline is where the full score came from.

What the scene reports fills the gap the manufacturer leaves. On Fahrzeugpflegeforum one user says the layer had dropped off noticeably after 1,200 kilometres and three weeks, another lost the slickness after five weeks and three washes. Beading and sheeting are strong at the start and get weaker with every wash. If you cover a lot of miles, you top up monthly rather than twice a year.

The second limit sits in the approval list, in what is missing from it. The list covers metallic and solid paint, nano paint and the more scratch-resistant clear coats, plus gloss wrap. Matt paint and matt wrap are not on it, which follows for a product built to add mirror gloss. Glass is not on it either: on glass, users report light ghosting when the wipers run, and in your line of sight that is the wrong trade-off.

Even the test score stays honest. The 92 out of 100 at AUTO STRASSENVERKEHR include 9 of a possible 10 points for material compatibility, not the full mark. On black paint and a wrapped roof, hands-on testers found the odd streak too, easy enough to remove, but there all the same.

The HIGH END works in the towel, the Speed Wax in the sponge

Both A1 spray waxes protect the paint, but they ask for different work: the HIGH END comes straight back off, the Speed Wax Plus 3 has to dry through completely first.

If you put ten minutes in after every wash and want the paint protected at the end of it, the A1 "HIGH END" Spray Wax is the right one. If you turn up twice a year and want up to six months of beading, you grab the spray wax with the carnauba booster. That one works with an applicator sponge, a circular application and a flash-off until it is fully dry, and it wants paint that is new or freshly polished.

That splits the two audiences cleanly. The HIGH END is for people who fold the protection into the drying pass and would rather freshen it up every few weeks than block out a slot for it. It is not the product for someone who books a whole Saturday in spring and expects half a year of peace afterwards. You will find both routes side by side in the Dr. Wack spray wax range.

Bottle size comes down to area, not ambition. The 500 ml with the trigger gun covers a whole car, the 100 ml is meant for touching up a single panel and costs a good 40 per cent more per litre. Storage is frost-free: the data sheet puts the freezing point at 0 degrees, and an emulsion that has frozen through splits and never comes back.

And then there is the number that makes the real difference. The 92 points come from June 2022. The formula that earned them has been on the shelf since 1 March 2022, reworked after the recall of 29 June 2021, when a raw material that varied batch to batch cost four batches their long-term hydrophobicity.

So when you read the test win, you are not reading a brand promise, you are reading the result of a correction. Using the A1 "HIGH END" Spray Wax

From the last rinse to the wiped-off film

The spray wax goes onto clean paint. So wash the car first and rinse it down properly. The paint can be dry afterwards or still slightly damp, it just should not be dripping wet. If it is damp, you save yourself the second drying pass: pull the water off roughly, then mist straight onto the damp panel. The water left behind thins the heavy emulsion a little and makes it easier to spread.

Shake the bottle well and turn the nozzle to the spray setting. Mist thinly onto one connected section, not onto a whole side of the car. A door, a wing or half a bonnet is the right size. On dark paint and on gloss wrap you are better off putting the pulls into the towel rather than onto the panel, which takes the edge off the dosing.

Spread the product evenly with a premium microfibre towel and take the residue off straight away with the unused side. There is no flash-off time for anything to react in. Dr. Wack recommends two towels, one for spreading and one for the wipe-off. As soon as a towel starts to smear, move to a fresh section of it rather than pressing harder.

On a mid-size car, what we see day-to-day is around 20 minutes for all the paintwork. The first run takes longer because you still have to work out how you want to split the car up. That comes with the territory and says nothing about your result.

At the end, turn the nozzle back to the stop setting. That is the anti-leak position and the reason the small bottle does not make a mess in the door pocket.

After the application, keep the paint away from water for at least an hour, otherwise you give away the long-term effect.
